True Change
I just got done listening to Barach Obamas' speech in Houston after he won in Wisc. At several points in his speech he talked about change that needs to happen in our country and world. He talked about several ideas that I thought resonated some of the teachings of Jesus. I'm becoming a fan of this guy. This will probably freak some of my conservative family and friends but that has never stopped me before!
I also earlier in the night listened to Mcains' acceptance speech and just wasn't impressed. He left a bad feeling in my gut. All he wanted to talk about was the Islamic threat and how we need to build up our military. He spoke from a voice of strength and how he had been tested and his leadership was right for the country. I couldn't help but think how the republican party has had their chance and so far in my mind haven't left our country in a good position.
I guess General Colon Powell (sp) summed it up for me a few years ago when he made the statement that We would never win the war on terror by military force. We will only win through humanitarian aid. (love your neighbor ring a bell?) He continued by saying it's much harder to bomb a country that just built a school in your village.
Have you noticed in the recent past how popular helping your neighbor is becoming?

- Extreme home makeover (I'm in tears when I watch)
- Teachings by great pastors (Rob Bell, Brian Mclaren)
- New church plants becoming missional focused. (City Life, The Deep, Overflow)
- The One Campaign
- The new Oprah show where she gives people money so they can give it to others.
These are just a few off the top of my head. I'm beginning to think true change can happen!
Let's provide some Hope!
Randy

Like you, I see a need for change in the world, our country included. The change I see we need is in how we think and how we act. Unfortunately I have a hard time agreing with you on Obama. All I see from him is someone that has found a great catch phrase and is running with it to further his political career. He does talk about change needed but I have not heard him say how we can reach that change. It is a easy "Catch Phrase" to use when you know even a lot of conservatives would like to find a way to end the war. But how is he going to do that? What I hear, is he wants to start pulling our troops out ASAP. But I've heard nothing about us sending more people over to help rebuild. And if we do help rebuild who is going to watch the people rebuildings backs? Let's not forget the people over there don't think the way we do. It will take some time for us to reach the point that Colan Powell talked about.
What about the home front? From what I hear, Obama's solution to help people out is more goverment programs. How does that work? We already know what happens when a church starts "programing" things to death.
Let me also add I'm not a Macain supporter either. At this point I hope who ever gets in is out in 4 years. Lets not depend on our countries leadership to make the change. We need to start the change down here. As a country we need to stop being "mind numbed robots" waiting for the next president or someone else to tell us what we need to do next. We need to get out there and start the example. Maybe then we can look for different reasons to elect a leader.

Ok after a little further investigation it looks as if Obama has some positive things to say about how he wants to make change.
Now we have a mere 9 months to go till we need to make a final decision.

The sadest part for me is that most people only look at the surface and never dig deep enough to find the real person. I'm sure if you begin comparing your core vaules against all of the presidential wannabe's you may not like what you find.
